Rainy Oregon

Monday morning, we woke to find ourselves well rested and Honeyman state park 3 miles south of Florence. It was the heart of sand dune country, and we'de spent sunday (a rest day) watching all the tourists dragging their dune buggies and ATVs behind their RVs. We'd also climbed a sand dune ourself (with our bikes hoisted over our shoulders to avoid the highly dreaded sand-on-the-chain) in order to dunk our wheels into the waters of the Pacific, as is the TransAmerica tradition. We spent the morning getting stuff together for our trek East...went to grocery store, and made a final stop at the local bikeshop. The exstoner employess of Bicycles 101 (on Hwy 101 in downtown Florence) had kept us pretty entertained for the previous two days! We headed out of town and biked about 60 miles to a County Park just outside of Eugene, where we spent the night. As it turned out, it was a very WET night. So we slept in the next morning and took out sweet time getting to Eugene. After completing a bunch of other missions (including new puncture resistant tires for Derek and a three hour burrito eating spree for Rachel and Sarah) it was time to find a place for the night. We ended up camping in the yard of a hostel right near downtown...perhaps our most interesting accomodations so far.
Today we will be continuing our trek eastward, heading for the base of McKenzie pass, which we will climb tomorow (over 5000 feet!). Hopefully once we clear that, the rain won't get to us...
For now, it'll be one wet ride.
Love you all!
Sarah
